The importance of technology in modern marketing grows daily, and the emphasis on search engine optimisation (SEO) is now huge for most businesses because of the number of people that use Google and the other main engines to find the products and services that they need. This is an area of marketing that can be difficult to get to grips with, largely because the goalposts are changing daily. According to Forrester, 85% of marketers are using, piloting, or planning to pilot search engine marketing programs this year.

Currently the main things to focus on if you want to boost your search engine ranking are the titles of the pages in your website, the wording within your pages, and the number and quality of inbound links to your site. There are some clever ways to boost your ranking that may not be immediately obvious. For example do you have a presence on Ecademy and LinkedIn? These are like business versions of MySpace or Facebook and are more well used than a lot of people realise.

The major FTSE 100 companies pay organisations such as Accenture huge sums of money for their advice on this subject, but the SMEs that we deal with could not stretch to this.
